ABSTRACT

Patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, who have decreased level of consciousness and are receiving sedative and paralytic drugs; lose the protective mechanisms of eyes. Consequently increases the risk of developing ocular surface disorders. Therefore, the aim of this study was to Comparing the effectiveness of two methods of eye care in prevention of ocular surface disorders in critically ill patients. In this clinical trial, 42 eligible patients divided in two groups by random allocation method. Each of the eyes in each group of patients randomized to receive one method of eye care. Simple eye ointment was administered every 6 hours and tapes were replaced every 6 hours, too. The eyes were examined daily for ocular surface disorders, by an intensivist and with a portable slit lamp, for seven days The data were analyzed by descriptive and analytical test [Chi-square, Fisher exact, ANOVA and T-test] with SPSS Ver 20. Of the 20 eyes that had a positive fluorescein test, three [3.6%] were in the simple eye ointment group and seventeen [20.2%] were in the eyelid taping group. This difference was statistically significant [X[2]=12.8, P=0.000]. In the present study, simple eye ointment and had the greatest impact on the prevention of ocular surface disorders than eyelids taping. Thus, using the simple eye ointment for eye care, are recommended

ABSTRACT

To report a case of endogenous Klebsiella endophthalmitis associated with liver abscess in Iran. A 79 year old man was referred with chief complaint of left eye pain and visual loss. The patient had conjunctival hyperemia, corneal edema, hypopyon and severe vitreous cellular reaction in the left eye and yellowish conjunctival discoloration which was apparent in the right eye. Abdominal CT scan revealed a right liver lobe abscess that underwent percutaneous liver biopsy under sonography guide. Blood, vitreous and liver mass cultures revealed Klebsiella Pneumonia growth. The patient was diagnosed as a case of endogenous Klebsiella endophthalmitis secondary to bacteremia associated with liver abscess. This report suggests that rather than being confined to Far East, endogenous endophthalmitis secondary to liver abscess due to Klebsiella pneumonia may be a global problem

ABSTRACT

Processing conditions affect sensitometric properties of X-ray films. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the sensitometric characteristics of InSight [IP], a new F-speed film, in fresh and used processing solutions in dental office condition and compare them with Ektaspeed Plus [EP]. In this experimental in vitro study, an aluminum step wedge was used to construct characteristic curves for InSight and Ektaspeed Plus films [Kodak Eastman, Rochester, USA], All films were processed in Champion solution [X-ray Iran, Tehran, Iran] both manually and automatically in a period of six days. Unexposed films of both types were processed manually and automatically to determine base plus fog density. Speed and film contrast were measured according to ISO definition. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and T tests with P<0.05 as the level of significance. IP was 20 to 22% faster than EP and showed to be an F-speed film when processed in automatic condition and E-F film where processed manually. Also it was F-speed film when processed in automatic condition and E-F film when processed manually. Also it was F-speed in fresh solutions and E-speed in old solution. IP and EP contrasts were similar in automatic processing but EF contrast was higher when processed manually. Both EP and IP films had standard values of base plus fog [<0.35] and B+F densities were decreased in old solution. Based on the results of this study, InSight is a F-speed film with a speed of at least 20% greater than Ektaspeed. In addition, it reduces patient exposure with no damage to image quality

ABSTRACT

Papillary cystic tumor of pancreas is a rare neoplasm which principally affects young women. It has a good prognosis and has a low malignant potential. Because of its similarity to other cystic pancreatic lesions, preoperative diagnosis is difficult to make. Our patient was a 19 years old girl who presented with an abdominal mass. Definitive diagnosis was not made preoperatively. The diagnosis of papillary cystic neoplasm was made through histopathological examination of the specimen after surgery. The patient has had no evidence of recurrence during the last six months. This rare tumor may be symptomless or may present with vague symptoms such as feeling of abdominal heaviness. Complete removal of the tumor will culminate in a low recurrence rate
